Drugmaker Emcure has expanded the official uses for its product Poviztra after India’s drug regulator, the CDSCO, approved semaglutide for treating MASH. In plain terms: a regulator cleared semaglutide (the active drug in Poviztra) for a liver condition called MASH, and Emcure updated its product labeling so doctors can prescribe Poviztra for that condition. Semaglutide is a medicine that acts like a natural gut hormone that tells your brain you’re full and slows how fast your stomach empties. You’ve probably heard it as the active ingredient in brand-name drugs used for diabetes and weight loss. It works by activating a specific receptor in the body (a kind of chemical “switch”) that influences appetite, blood sugar, and some metabolic processes. It’s given by injection and has become widely used in recent years for weight management and type 2 diabetes. The announcement refers to regulatory approval, which usually follows clinical trial data showing benefit. That means health authorities reviewed studies and judged semaglutide helps with MASH enough to allow its labeled use. MASH stands for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis — a severe form of fatty liver disease linked to obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic problems.
