India's GLP-1 Guidance Warns Weight Loss Can Cause Muscle, Nutrient Loss

India has just issued its first guidance about GLP-1 drugs — the class that includes popular weight-loss medicines people know by brand names like Ozempic and Wegovy. The guidance warns that, along with weight loss, patients can experience loss of muscle and deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. It’s essentially a national caution: these drugs can help people lose weight but they are not risk-free and need monitoring. GLP-1 drugs are lab-made versions of a natural hormone made in your gut. That hormone helps control blood sugar and tells your brain you’re full, so these medicines reduce appetite and slow digestion. Because they make you eat less, people using them often lose fat. But if you’re eating much less for a long time, your body can also break down muscle and miss out on important nutrients that normally come from food. The guidance is based on clinical experience and studies that show weight loss from GLP-1 treatments can include some muscle loss and that people can develop lower levels of certain vitamins and minerals. The recommendation is not from one big new experiment of thousands of people; it’s a synthesis of existing research, case reports, and expert opinion tailored for India. The messages are practical: monitor muscle strength and body composition, check blood tests for nutrient levels, and consider dietary changes or supplements if needed.
