Vivani Medical says it plans to start a small human trial in August for a tiny implant that slowly releases semaglutide, the drug in Ozempic and Wegovy. The announcement comes after Vivani reached some kind of deal with Novo Nordisk, the company that makes semaglutide. This is an early-stage step — they’re talking about testing the implant in people, not selling it yet. Semaglutide is a man-made version of a natural hormone that helps control appetite and blood sugar. It tells parts of the brain “I’m satisfied” and slows how fast the stomach empties, which reduces hunger and helps with weight loss and diabetes control. Right now most semaglutide treatments are injections or pills. Vivani’s idea is a tiny implant that sits under the skin and releases the drug over time, so people wouldn’t need regular shots. What the company is actually doing here is moving into human testing of their implant device. The headline says they aim to start an August trial, which usually means a small, early-stage study focused on safety and how the implant releases the drug. The deal with Novo Nordisk likely covers access to the drug or technical collaboration, but the announcement doesn’t mean the implant is proven to work better than existing options. Early trials often involve tens of people, not hundreds or thousands, and mainly check for side effects and whether the device behaves as expected. This matters because for people who find regular injections or daily pills inconvenient, an implant could be easier: you’d get a single device placed under the skin and avoid frequent dosing.
