That means other companies can sell the same medicine without the brand-name price tag, which could remove a big barrier to affordable diabetes care. Semaglutide is a drug that acts like a natural hormone your gut makes after you eat. That hormone helps tell your brain you are full and slows how fast your stomach empties, which can lower blood sugar and reduce appetite. Doctors use semaglutide to treat type 2 diabetes and, at higher doses and under a different brand name, for weight management. It is given by injection or in some newer forms as a pill, and it works by activating a specific target on cells called a receptor (think of the receptor as a lock and semaglutide as the key that fits it). The reports and expert comments are about the market and access, not a new scientific study of the drug’s effects.
