It also matters for public health: widespread use of poorly regulated products can lead to supply problems, counterfeit goods, and harder-to-track harms. There are important caveats and risks. Some peptides can cause side effects ranging from mild reactions to more serious metabolic or hormonal problems. Compounded peptides and online products can be contaminated, mislabeled, or vary in dose. Regulatory status varies: a peptide might be approved as a prescription drug, allowed only in trials, or sold as an unregulated supplement, depending on the country and claim. Pregnant people, those with serious medical conditions, and anyone on other medications should be especially cautious. Finally, long-term safety and interactions are often unknown. Bottom line: peptides include powerful biological signals that can help in some cases, but the current boom mixes well-studied drugs with poorly tested products, so buyers should be cautious and prefer treatments backed by solid clinical evidence and medical oversight.
