Some Patients Develop Rare Eye Disorder After Ozempic-Style Drugs

A new report is linking a rare eye disorder to medications like Ozempic. Australian health authorities and doctors have noticed a small number of patients who developed serious eye problems after starting drugs in the same family as Ozempic. The news is a warning rather than proof — it flags a possible connection that needs more study. The drugs in question are semaglutide and related medicines. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy. In plain terms, these medicines copy a natural hormone from the gut that tells your brain you’re full and slows how fast food leaves your stomach. They are mainly prescribed for type 2 diabetes and, in higher doses, for weight loss. The reports describe a handful of people who developed diabetic retinopathy worsening or another rare eye condition after beginning these drugs. Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease tied to diabetes that can lead to vision loss if it gets worse. The current information is based on case reports and doctors’ observations, not on a large randomized trial. That means we don’t know if the drugs caused the eye problems, made an existing condition worse, or if other factors were involved.
