A monthly triple-acting weight peptide cut more fat in mice than controls

Ascletis, a biotech company, reported that a new experimental drug called ASC37 caused more weight loss than controls in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. They say the drug can be given under the skin once a month and that it acts on three targets at once. The result comes from preclinical lab work in mice, not from people. ASC37 is a peptide, which just means it's a small chain of amino acids — basically a tiny copy of a natural signal the body uses. Unlike a pill, it’s designed to be injected under the skin. The drug is described as a triple agonist for GLP-1R, GIPR, and GCGR. In plain language, that means it mimics three different hormones or hormone signals: one similar to GLP-1 that helps reduce appetite and slow digestion, one like GIP that can influence metabolism, and one like glucagon that raises blood sugar and can boost calorie burning. The idea is that hitting all three pathways might produce stronger weight-loss effects than hitting only one. The announcement is based on studies in diet-induced obese mice — animals fed a high-calorie diet until they gain weight. Ascletis reports superior weight loss with ASC37 compared with whatever control they used (the snippet doesn’t give exact numbers, duration, or whether they compared to existing drugs). Because this is preclinical, it tells us the drug has promise in animals but not yet that it’s safe or effective in humans. Mouse results often guide whether a drug moves into human trials, but many things that work in mice do not work the same in people. Current approved drugs that act on one or two of these receptors (like semaglutide) have helped many people lose weight. Until ASC37 completes careful human trials and regulatory review, it should be seen as an experimental candidate, not an available treatment.
