Monthly Injectable Combo Peptide Causes Greater Weight Loss in Obese Mice

A biotech company called Ascletis reported that a new experimental drug, ASC37, caused more weight loss than whatever they compared it to in obese mice fed a high-fat diet. The company says the drug is a once-a-month injectable under the skin (subcutaneous) and that it hits three targets at once. This is an early preclinical result in animals, not a human trial or an approved medicine. ASC37 is described as a “triple peptide agonist.” In plain terms, it’s a small chain of amino acids (a peptide) designed to mimic natural signaling molecules in the body. It activates three receptors: GLP-1R, GIPR and GCGR. Those names stand for receptors that respond to hormones involved in appetite, blood sugar and metabolism. Drugs that hit GLP-1R—like Ozempic and Wegovy—help people feel full and lower blood sugar. The idea with ASC37 is to combine actions on all three receptors to boost weight loss and perhaps metabolic effects, and to do it with a formulation that only needs one monthly injection. The study behind the announcement used mice that became obese from eating a high-fat diet. According to Ascletis, mice given ASC37 lost more weight than controls in that model. For a regular person, the practical takeaway is cautious interest. If the approach pans out in humans, it could mean stronger weight loss or more convenient dosing (monthly instead of weekly or daily). People watching the obesity and diabetes drug space, investors, and patients who struggle with weight might care about this direction of research. But there are important caveats and risks. This is early-stage, preclinical data in mice—not proof of safety or benefit in humans.
