A muscle-preserving drug plus Ozempic-style shot enters mid-stage trial

Veru, a biotech company, has finished signing up all the participants for a mid-stage clinical study testing a combination of two drugs: enobosarm and semaglutide. This trial is called PLATEAU and is a Phase 2b study, which means researchers are looking more carefully at whether the treatment works and what dose is best, after initial safety and early effectiveness have been explored. Completing enrollment simply means they have enough people to run the study as planned. Semaglutide is the same active ingredient found in well-known medicines like Ozempic and Wegovy. In plain terms, it copies a natural hormone from the gut that helps reduce appetite and slows how fast food leaves the stomach, so people tend to eat less and feel fuller. Enobosarm is a different kind of drug — it’s a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM). That sounds technical, but it basically means it aims to act like some of the muscle-preserving effects of hormones such as testosterone, while trying to avoid many of the usual side effects of hormone therapy. What the PLATEAU trial will test is whether giving these two drugs together is better than one alone or a placebo for the condition they’re targeting. The announcement you saw only says enrollment is complete; it doesn’t report results yet. Because this is a Phase 2b trial, the study likely involves a few dozen to a few hundred people and will measure things like weight change, muscle mass, symptoms, or safety signals over weeks to months. We don’t yet know outcomes, how big any effects will be, or whether the combination is safe and effective compared with existing options. Why people care: combining a weight-loss drug (semaglutide) with a medication that could preserve or build muscle (enobosarm) makes sense on paper. For people losing weight, especially older adults or those with certain illnesses, keeping muscle is important for strength, mobility, and overall health. If the combo works, it could offer better weight loss while avoiding the muscle loss that sometimes accompanies dieting or some treatments. Investors, patients with obesity or muscle-wasting conditions, and doctors will be watching for the trial’s results. Important caveats: enrollment completion is an early administrative milestone, not evidence the treatment works or is safe. Phase 2b trials can show promise but often need larger Phase 3 trials to confirm benefits and risks. SARMs like enobosarm have complex safety profiles and are not the same as approved hormone therapies; long-term effects may be unknown. Semaglutide is already approved for some uses, but combining drugs can change side effects. Until the study publishes data and regulators weigh in, this combination should not be assumed effective or available.
