Semaglutide is the active ingredient found in brand-name drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. It’s a type of drug called a GLP-1 receptor agonist — that means it imitates a natural hormone (GLP-1) your gut releases after you eat. That hormone tells your brain you’re satisfied, reduces appetite, and slows how fast your stomach empties. In practice, semaglutide is used to treat type 2 diabetes and, at higher doses, to help with weight loss. The announcement is about expanding access and supply, not a new study. EMS launching semaglutide locally means more people in Brazil could get the medicine, potentially at lower cost than imported branded versions. The report doesn’t present new clinical trial results; it’s a commercial and distribution move. So there’s no change in what the scientific evidence says about effectiveness — semaglutide’s benefits and limits are based on large clinical trials done elsewhere.
