Media outlets and patient discussions describe more complaints, and specialists are warning that hair loss may be an underrecognized side effect of these medications. The conversation echoes an earlier round of reports about "Ozempic face," where weight loss changed facial appearance. Ozempic is a brand-name medication whose active ingredient is semaglutide. In plain terms, semaglutide is a man-made version of a natural hormone made in the gut that helps control appetite and blood sugar. It tells your brain you're less hungry and makes your stomach empty more slowly, which together encourage weight loss. It’s prescribed for type 2 diabetes and, at higher doses under the brand name Wegovy, for chronic weight management. What the reports and early studies show is mixed. There are many anecdotal stories — people saying they noticed more hair shedding a few months after starting semaglutide or similar drugs. A few small studies and physician observations have also suggested an association between rapid weight loss and temporary hair shedding, a condition called telogen effluvium (hair pushed into a resting phase and then falling out). But robust large-scale studies specifically linking semaglutide to lasting hair loss are limited. Where hair loss is reported, it often appears months after starting treatment and may be related to the speed and amount of weight loss rather than the drug itself. Why this matters is straightforward: hair loss can be distressing and affect quality of life. People choosing semaglutide for weight management or diabetes might not expect this side effect, and it can influence decisions about starting or continuing treatment. Clinicians should be aware so they can counsel patients, monitor for hair changes, and consider whether the timing of hair loss fits with rapid weight loss or another cause, such as nutritional deficiencies, stress, or other medications. There are important caveats. Hair shedding that follows rapid weight loss is often temporary and reversible, though it can take months to regrow. Not everyone on semaglutide experiences hair loss, and we don’t yet have definitive proof that semaglutide directly causes chronic baldness. People with a history of hair conditions, nutritional deficiencies, or other risk factors should discuss these with their doctor before starting treatment.
