VA Clinic Joins National Trial Testing Ozempic-Style Drug for Alcohol Use

A Veterans Affairs clinic in Asheville has joined a larger national study testing whether a drug similar to Ozempic can help treat alcohol addiction. The study is enrolling people who drink heavily to see if giving them this medication reduces alcohol use compared with a placebo (a fake treatment). The drug in question is part of a family called GLP-1 receptor agonists. A common brand name people know is Ozempic (used for diabetes) and Wegovy (used for weight loss). In plain terms, these medicines act like a gut hormone that talks to the brain and can reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying, and change reward signals. They’re not alcohol itself or a traditional “alcohol medicine” — they’re repurposed drugs that might change the brain’s response to cravings or the pleasure from drinking. What the trial aims to show is whether people given this Ozempic-type drug drink less than similar people given a placebo. The Asheville VA is one of many sites contributing patients to the larger randomized controlled trial, which is the gold standard for testing a drug’s effect.
