VA Trials Ozempic-Style Drug to Reduce Alcohol Use Among Veterans

The Veterans Affairs health system is starting a clinical trial to see if a class of diabetes and weight-loss drugs called GLP-1 medications can help treat alcohol use disorder in veterans. In plain terms, they’re testing whether a medicine that changes appetite and blood sugar could also reduce heavy drinking. The trial is just getting underway, so it’s an official research effort rather than a proven new treatment. GLP-1 drugs (short for glucagon-like peptide-1) include medicines like semaglutide and liraglutide, which you may have heard of because they’re used for type 2 diabetes and for weight loss. These drugs mimic a natural hormone that affects how full you feel, how fast your stomach empties, and some brain circuits involved in reward and craving. That combination is why researchers are curious whether the same effects might reduce the urge to drink alcohol. The study itself will enroll veterans with alcohol use disorder to compare the GLP-1 medication against a control condition. The report doesn’t claim the drug already works for this purpose; it describes a trial set up to test the idea. That means we don’t yet have big human results showing benefit. Earlier evidence prompting the trial mainly comes from animal studies and a few smaller human or observational hints that the drugs might curb alcohol intake or craving. They’re approved by regulators for diabetes and weight management, not currently for alcohol use disorder, so using them for drinking would be off-label until evidence and approvals change. The trial will help clarify safety and benefit specifically for veterans with alcohol problems, but results will take time. People should not start or stop medications without talking to their doctor. Bottom line: The VA is formally testing whether GLP-1 drugs might reduce problematic drinking in veterans — it’s a promising idea based on early signals, but we won’t know if it works and is safe for this use until the trial’s results are in.
