VA Tests Diabetes-Weight Shot to Curb Heavy Drinking in Veterans

The Veterans Affairs health system has started a nationwide clinical trial testing a type of drug called a GLP-1 agonist to see if it can help people who drink too much. The story says the VA is running this study across its hospitals and clinics to find out whether the medication reduces problematic drinking. It’s a formal research effort, not a new approved use yet. GLP-1 drugs are a class of medicines originally developed to treat diabetes and, more recently, used for weight loss.
