Could Ozempic-Style Drugs Curb Alcohol Use? Veterans Trial Begins

A new clinical trial in the United States will test whether drugs in the GLP-1 family — the same class that includes Ozempic and Wegovy — can help treat alcohol use disorder in veterans. The trial is just getting started, so there’s no final result yet. It’s a formal, controlled study designed to see if these medications reduce drinking and improve recovery compared with a placebo (a dummy pill). GLP-1 drugs are based on a hormone your gut makes after you eat. That hormone tells your brain you’re full and slows how fast your stomach empties. Medicines like semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy) copy that hormone’s action. People mostly know these drugs for weight loss and diabetes because they lower appetite and blood sugar. Scientists are interested in them for other behaviors, like substance use, because the same brain circuits that control hunger overlap with circuits for reward and craving. What this trial will actually do is recruit veterans with alcohol use disorder and randomly give some participants a GLP-1 drug and others a placebo, then compare outcomes over time. That’s the gold-standard way to test a treatment. Right now, earlier studies hint that GLP-1 drugs can reduce alcohol intake in animals and in small human studies, but the evidence in people is limited and mixed. This new trial is larger and focused specifically on veterans, so it should give clearer answers about whether the effect is real and how big it is. Why this matters: alcohol use disorder is common and hard to treat. If an already approved class of drugs can help reduce drinking, that could add an important tool for doctors and patients. Veterans as a group often face higher rates of substance use and barriers to care, so a positive result could have direct benefits for a population in need. Also, because GLP-1 drugs are already prescribed for other conditions, doctors would have existing experience with dosing and monitoring. There are important caveats and risks. GLP-1 drugs can cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, and in rare cases more serious problems like pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). They are not currently approved for alcohol use disorder, which means using them for that purpose would be off-label unless a regulator approves it later. Most of the promising data so far come from animal studies or small human trials, so early optimism could fade when larger trials finish. People with certain medical conditions, pregnant people, or those trying to conceive should not take these drugs without medical advice. Bottom line: a new veterans’ trial will test whether GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide can help treat alcohol use disorder, but we’ll need to wait for the trial results before knowing if they really work and are safe for this purpose.
