Mounjaro Shrinks Fat and Liver Fat — But Scars in Fat Persist

A new report says the diabetes drug Mounjaro helps people lose weight and reduces fat in the liver, but it doesn’t fully reverse scarring that had already formed in fat tissue. In plain terms: people on the drug got thinner and their livers looked healthier on scans or tests, but some kinds of long-term damage in body fat stuck around. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide. It’s a man-made molecule that acts like two naturally occurring gut hormones that signal fullness and affect blood sugar. People take it by injection. Doctors started using it for type 2 diabetes, and more recently it’s become popular for weight loss because it lowers appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties after eating. The research behind this story looked at people taking Mounjaro and measured several things: body weight, how much fat was in the liver, and whether the fat tissue itself showed signs of scarring (scientists call that fibrosis). The drug clearly produced weight loss and lowered liver fat. But when researchers examined markers of fibrosis in fat tissue, those signs did not disappear during the study period.
