A new oral GLP-1 pill enters late-stage trials for obesity worldwide

A Chinese biotech company called Ascletis has started a big, international late-stage clinical trial (Phase III) to test its experimental oral obesity drug called ASC30. Phase III trials are the last major step before a company seeks regulatory approval, so this is a sign Ascletis is trying to move ASC30 toward being an approved treatment for weight loss. The announcement is about the start of the trial itself, not about final results. ASC30 is described as an oral GLP-1 drug. GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone our gut naturally makes after we eat. Drugs that act like GLP-1 help people feel fuller, slow how fast the stomach empties, and can lower appetite and body weight. Many popular injectable drugs for diabetes and obesity, like semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy), work on the GLP-1 system. ASC30 is notable because it’s designed to be taken by mouth instead of by injection. The news here is about the trial launch, not about outcomes. A Phase III trial typically enrolls many hundreds to thousands of participants across multiple countries and compares the drug to a placebo or another treatment over months to see how much weight people lose and whether the drug is safe. Since Ascletis only announced the start, we don’t yet know how many people will be enrolled, the exact design, or any results. Until that larger trial finishes and the data are released, we can’t say whether ASC30 will work as well as existing GLP-1 drugs or whether it will be safe long-term. Why this matters is practical: an effective oral GLP-1 weight-loss pill would be a big deal for people who need treatment for obesity but don’t want or can’t use injections. Pills are usually easier to store and take, and they can be more acceptable to many patients. If ASC30 proves safe and effective in the Phase III trial, it could expand options for treating obesity and potentially reach more people worldwide than current injectable GLP-1 drugs. There are important caveats. Starting a Phase III trial is an early administrative milestone, not proof of benefit. Many drugs that enter Phase III do not end up approved. We also don’t yet know the side effect profile or how ASC30 compares in effectiveness to established GLP-1 injectables. GLP-1 drugs can cause nausea, stomach issues, and other side effects, and long-term risks are still being studied. Regulatory approval will depend on the trial’s results and on safety data across larger groups. Bottom line: Ascletis has launched a large international trial to test an oral GLP-1 weight-loss pill, which is promising if it works, but we need completed trial data before we know whether ASC30 is safe and effective.
