Asking Peptides to Ease Benzodiazepine Withdrawals? Risks Outweigh Early Hype

Someone online asked whether certain peptides could help with withdrawal while they taper off Klonopin (a benzodiazepine) and later stop a low dose of lamotrigine (Lamictal). They say the drugs were prescribed for benign muscle twitches, didn’t help much, and they expect rough withdrawal. They mentioned they already ordered something called selank and asked for recommendations for peptides to ease withdrawal. Selank is a short synthetic peptide developed in Russia that’s sometimes described as an “anxiolytic” (anxiety-reducing) and cognitive-supporting peptide. It’s not a steroid or a conventional antidepressant. In basic terms, it’s a small chain of amino acids that researchers have played with to see if it changes brain chemicals related to anxiety and memory. It isn’t approved as a medication by major regulators like the U.S. FDA, and most evidence comes from animal studies or small human trials with limited quality. What the existing research shows is thin. In animals, selank and a few related peptides have shown some effects on anxiety-like behavior and stress responses. A handful of small human studies, mostly from Russia, report mild reductions in anxiety and some cognitive effects, but these studies are small, not widely replicated, and often lack the rigorous controls used in larger drug trials. There’s very little reliable evidence that any peptide will prevent or significantly ease benzodiazepine or anticonvulsant (like lamotrigine) withdrawal symptoms in humans. Withdrawal from benzodiazepines can include rebound anxiety, insomnia, muscle twitching, and in severe cases seizures — and that’s a clinical problem that hasn’t been proven to be solved by over-the-counter peptides. Why this matters: withdrawal from psychiatric or nerve-related medications can be hard and sometimes dangerous. People tapering off medication want safer, evidence-based options to reduce symptoms. If someone is considering experimental peptides like selank, it’s important they know the evidence is minimal and that these products are not standard medical treatments. Clinicians with experience in benzodiazepine tapering can offer validated strategies—very slow tapers, switching to longer-acting drugs in some cases, behavioral support, sleep hygiene, and sometimes temporarily prescribed medications with known risk profiles—rather than unproven supplements. Caveats and risks: peptides sold online vary greatly in quality and may not contain what their labels claim. Selank and similar compounds are not approved in many countries, so legal status and manufacturing standards are uncertain. There can be side effects, interactions with other medications, and the risk of delaying proper medical care. Most importantly, benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause severe symptoms, including seizures, so any taper plan should be overseen by a prescribing clinician. If someone experiences severe withdrawal signs, they should seek medical help immediately. Bottom line: selank and similar peptides are experimental and not a proven fix for benzodiazepine or lamotrigine withdrawal; talk with a doctor experienced in medication tapering before trying them.
