The marketplace is crowded with new peptide products and clinics offering them, but the scientific evidence for many of these uses is thin or missing. Regulators like the FDA are now debating how tightly to control sales, marketing, and clinics that inject or prescribe these peptides. Peptides are small pieces of proteins — think of them as tiny signals your body uses to tell cells what to do. Some peptides are made into medicines because they can mimic or block those natural signals. For example, a well-known peptide drug called semaglutide mimics a gut hormone that reduces appetite and slows digestion; that’s the active ingredient in drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. But not every peptide sold or offered in clinics has been through the same rigorous testing those medicines have.
