Someone mixed a powdered peptide called Selank into a bottle using bacteriostatic (BAC) water and plans to use it as a nasal spray. After making a solution that delivers about 200 micrograms per 0.1 mL spray, they were told by others that BAC water is a poor choice for the nose because it contains benzyl alcohol. They’re asking whether that was a mistake or fine. Selank is a short synthetic peptide developed in Russia that’s sometimes used as a mood or anxiety aid and for cognitive effects in experimental settings. Think of a peptide as a tiny chunk of a protein that can interact with the body in specific ways. Selank is not an everyday over‑the‑counter nasal medicine, and it’s mainly found in research papers and niche use rather than broad clinical approval. It’s typically administered as a nasal spray in the research or self‑use community because that’s one route to get it into the system quickly. Bacteriostatic water is sterile water that contains a small amount of benzyl alcohol to stop bacteria from growing in multi‑dose vials. It’s commonly used to reconstitute medications that will be used more than once, allowing repeated withdrawals without contaminating the remainder. The concern people raised is that benzyl alcohol can irritate mucous membranes (the lining inside your nose) in some people, and nasal tissue is more sensitive than skin or muscle.
