Reporters are picking this up as hopeful, but the claims are still being sorted out by scientists. GLP-1 is shorthand for a natural chemical in your body called glucagon-like peptide-1. It’s a messenger your gut releases after you eat. The medicines are synthetic versions that act like that messenger. In plain terms, they tell your brain you’re less hungry and slow how fast your stomach empties, which helps people eat less and lose weight.
