Mounjaro Approved to Lower Heart Risk for Adults With Type 2 Diabetes

The FDA has approved Eli Lilly’s diabetes drug Mounjaro (generic name: tirzepatide) for a new use: to lower the risk of heart-related problems in adults with type 2 diabetes. That means doctors can now prescribe it not just to help control blood sugar and weight, but specifically because a major trial showed it reduced chances of heart attacks, strokes, and related deaths compared with a standard treatment. Tirzepatide is a man-made drug that acts like two natural gut hormones that help control blood sugar and appetite. In plain terms, it tricks the body into releasing insulin when needed and slows digestion so you feel fuller longer. People have heard of similar drugs like semaglutide (the ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy); tirzepatide works on the same general idea but hits two hormone targets instead of one.
