A new study reported that giving semaglutide to female mice increased their lifespan by about 12.4%. The headline is simple: mice treated with this drug lived noticeably longer than untreated mice in that experiment. The press snippet doesn’t include many details, so we don’t yet know the full design or how many animals were tested. Semaglutide is the drug that’s in brand-name medicines like Ozempic and Wegovy. In plain terms, it’s a small engineered copy of a natural signal made in the gut after you eat. That signal tells the brain you’re full and slows how fast your stomach empties. Clinically, semaglutide is used to help control blood sugar in diabetes and to reduce appetite and weight. It’s not a generic “anti‑aging pill” — it acts through specific body pathways tied to metabolism and appetite. The study itself is in mice, not people. The reported effect—12.4% longer life in female mice—means that, on average, the treated female mice lived about one-eighth longer than the controls. The snippet doesn’t say whether male mice saw the same benefit, how old the mice were when treatment started, how many mice were in each group, or whether the longer life came with better health or more years of illness.
