Semaglutide Boosts Older Mice Lifespan — Human Benefits Still Unclear

A new study reported that the diabetes drug semaglutide helped elderly mice live longer. The headline sounds big, but the work was done in mice, not people, and the details matter for how we interpret it. Semaglutide is a medicine used for type 2 diabetes and weight loss (sold under names like Ozempic and Wegovy). It acts like a natural gut hormone that tells the brain you’re full and slows how fast your stomach empties. Doctors use it to lower blood sugar and help with weight control, and scientists are interested in whether those same effects might influence aging and lifespan. In this study, researchers gave semaglutide to older mice and tracked how long they lived compared with untreated mice. The mice on semaglutide lived longer on average. That’s the main result. It’s important to note this was an animal experiment — mice are useful models, but they are not little humans. We don’t know if the same effect would occur in people, in part because dosing, metabolism, and causes of death differ between species.
