Brazilians Are Self-Medicating with Ozempic-Style Drugs, Survey Finds

A new report looked at how some adults in Brazil are using a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists on their own, without a doctor’s prescription. The study collected responses from people through an online survey and summarized who is self-medicating and why. It’s not a clinical trial or proof the practice is safe — it’s a snapshot of what some people are doing. GLP-1 receptor agonists are a group of medicines that act like a natural gut hormone (GLP-1) that helps control blood sugar and appetite. Drugs in this family include things people have heard of, like semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic/Wegovy). In simple terms, they can make you feel less hungry, slow how fast your stomach empties, and change how the body handles sugar. Doctors prescribe them mostly for type 2 diabetes and, increasingly, for weight loss in people who qualify. What this study actually did was run a web-based survey in Brazil asking adults about their use of these drugs without medical supervision. Because it’s an online survey, the results reflect who chose to respond, not a perfectly representative slice of the whole population. The paper reports how common self-medication is, the reasons people gave, and some basic characteristics of those people. It does not prove the drugs are safe when used this way, nor does it measure long-term outcomes or side effects in a controlled way. Why this matters is practical. GLP-1 receptor agonists are in high demand because they can help with weight loss and blood sugar control. If people are obtaining and using them without medical oversight, there are implications for safety, equity, and public health. Doctors, pharmacists, and policymakers may care because unmanaged use could lead to shortages for people who need prescriptions, unexpected side effects, or misuse. People curious about these drugs should know that self-medicating bypasses medical screening and monitoring. There are important caveats. A web survey can’t verify that respondents actually used the drugs, or how much and how often. The study can’t track medical complications or long-term effects. GLP-1 drugs can cause side effects like nausea and rare but serious issues that doctors watch for, and they are prescription medicines for a reason. They may not be appropriate for people with certain medical conditions or who are taking other medications. Regulations and availability vary by country, so legality and access matter too. Bottom line: the study shows some adults in Brazil report using GLP-1 drugs on their own, which raises safety and policy questions, but it doesn’t tell us whether that practice is effective or safe in the long term.
