A Semaglutide Shot Lengthens Life in Older Female Mice, Early Findings

Researchers at UC Berkeley report that a drug called semaglutide helped older female mice live longer. The headline is short and clear: in one lab study, giving semaglutide to elderly female mice increased their lifespan compared with similar mice that didn’t get the drug. That’s the basic news — it’s a mouse study, not a human trial. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in medicines you may have heard of, like Ozempic and Wegovy. It’s a man-made version of a natural hormone your gut releases after you eat. That hormone communicates with the brain to reduce appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties. Doctors currently use semaglutide to treat type 2 diabetes and to help people lose weight. What the study actually shows is limited but interesting: in this experiment, elderly female mice given semaglutide lived longer than untreated female mice. The report doesn’t say this was tested in men (male mice) or in people, and it doesn’t claim huge changes — just a measurable increase in lifespan under the conditions of that particular lab study. Mouse studies are a standard first step in biology because mice share many genes and processes with humans, but results in mice often do not translate directly to people. This matters because semaglutide is already widely used and well-studied for other reasons, so finding a possible effect on aging or lifespan in mice raises the question of whether similar benefits could show up in humans. If true, that could affect how we think about long-term health, aging research, and drugs people take for diabetes or weight loss. Researchers and companies may decide this is worth studying further in more animals and eventually in carefully designed human trials. Important caveats: this was a preclinical mouse study, not evidence that semaglutide makes older people live longer. Mice and humans differ in many ways, and lifespan effects in mice often fail to appear in human studies.
