Wegovy Approved in China to Treat Fatty Liver, Offering New Weight-Linked Option

Novo Nordisk has won approval in China to use its weight-loss drug Wegovy for treating fatty liver disease. In simple terms, Chinese regulators have allowed doctors to prescribe Wegovy for people with a specific liver condition linked to excess fat in the liver. This is a regulatory decision, not a new discovery—it means the drug can legally be used for this purpose in China. Wegovy’s active ingredient is semaglutide. That’s a man-made version of a natural hormone your gut releases after eating that helps control appetite and blood sugar. In people, semaglutide makes you feel fuller, slows how quickly your stomach empties, and can lead to significant weight loss when combined with diet and exercise. It’s already well known as the ingredient in popular medications for diabetes and weight loss. The approval in China is based on clinical trial data showing that semaglutide can improve markers of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or the more severe form, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). These trials generally involved patients being treated for months and showed improvements in liver fat and some signs of reduced inflammation or scarring. However, results vary by study: some show clear benefits, while others are more modest. Importantly, the approval reflects regulators’ judgment that evidence is strong enough to allow its use for this liver indication in that country, but it doesn’t mean it’s a guaranteed cure. Why this matters: fatty liver disease is common and can lead to serious problems like cirrhosis (permanent liver scarring) and liver failure. There are few approved drug treatments specifically for fatty liver, so having an option that also helps with weight loss is noteworthy. Patients in China who meet the criteria may now access a treatment that could reduce liver fat and potentially slow disease progression. Clinicians elsewhere will watch this closely as more data accumulate and other regulators consider similar approvals. There are important caveats and risks. Semaglutide can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes more serious digestive issues. Long-term effects on the liver specifically are still being studied, and not every patient responds the same way. Wegovy is prescription-only and expensive. It’s also not suitable for everyone—people with a history of certain endocrine cancers or specific medical conditions are usually advised against GLP-1 agonists (the drug class that includes semaglutide). Regulatory approval in one country doesn’t automatically apply elsewhere, so availability and guidelines will differ. Bottom line: China’s approval lets doctors there prescribe Wegovy for fatty liver disease based on trials showing benefit, but patients should weigh potential side effects, cost, and individual risks with their doctor.
