That surge has left some medical professionals worried because the field is poorly regulated and the evidence behind many claims is thin. "Peptides" are short chains of amino acids — think of them as tiny pieces of proteins. Your body makes lots of them naturally to send signals between cells. Some medicines copy those natural peptides, or slightly tweak them, to get a desired effect. For example, drugs like semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic) are peptide-based and work by mimicking a gut hormone to reduce appetite. But when people talk about peptide therapy at clinics, they often mean a wide mix of different peptides sold for many uses, not all of which have solid science behind them. What the reporting shows is mostly a trend and some small studies or anecdotal reports, not a large body of rigorous evidence. Clinics and companies often tout short-term benefits reported by customers or small trials. For a few peptides used in approved drugs, there is strong research and regulatory approval.
