An oral amylin-mimic pill begins U.S. safety tests for obesity

A Chinese biotech company called Ascletis has started the first early-stage (Phase I) human trial in the U.S. of a new oral drug called ASC36. The company says ASC36 is a peptide that acts on the amylin receptor and that they are testing it as a treatment for obesity. This announcement means the drug has moved from lab and animal work into testing in people for the first time in the U.S. ASC36 is described as an amylin receptor peptide agonist. In plain language: amylin is a natural hormone that your body releases with insulin after you eat. It helps signal fullness, slows how quickly the stomach empties, and affects blood sugar control. A “peptide” is a short chain of amino acids — basically a tiny protein-like molecule. An “agonist” means ASC36 is designed to mimic amylin’s action and activate the same receptor in the body. Unlike many approved diabetes and weight-loss drugs that are injected, Ascletis says ASC36 is oral — taken by mouth.
